What started in 2014 as a “what if” experiment to surprise and delight customers during the holidays has evolved into a much-anticipated day for all of us to be reminded what it means to give.

On Dec. 15, 2018, Meijer store directors and leadership surprised customers in each store by paying for their entire shopping cart during the fifth annual Very Merry Meijer event. Meijer cashiers who rung up the carts also received a $100 Meijer gift card.

Seeing the reactions of people who realized they were chosen is always priceless and rewarding. Yet, every year, some customers share what the gift means to their families.

Emily Parets said 2018 was difficult for her family. Her husband was deployed to Iraq, and some expensive emergency home repairs popped up right before Christmas. So when her purchases were paid for at the Lenox Twp., Mich., Meijer, she felt a huge sense of relief.

Rita and Al Alamat visited the Rochester Hills, Mich., Meijer to prepare for their upcoming Christmas gathering of 40 relatives in their Shelby Twp. home. At least a dozen children would be coming, and they wanted to make sure each had a gift to open – filling about five shopping carts in the process. The Alamats were shocked when Doug Meijer approached them at checkout and told them he was paying for it all.

Amber Roll said her surprise from the Westland, Mich., Meijer store director was a blessing. She was with her family to do some regular grocery shopping but admitted things were tight this year. Her surprise included a new bike and toys for her son, gift cards and an entire Christmas dinner. “I was in tears. I cannot believe this happened to us, but the miracles still live in 2018. I’m over-the-top floored and grateful.”

This short video highlights the surprises that took place. Since the first Very Merry Meijer, Meijer has gifted more than 1,150 customers their shopping carts full of toys, clothes, electronics, food and small appliances, totaling more than half a million dollars.
